Give Us Barabbas!

She is the smallest of the larger macaws, or the largest of the miniature macaws, or the only mid-sized macaw - I think it just depends on whose article you read. Very uncommon in the pet trade, we've only seen 4-5 instances in the past 5 years. Imagine our surprise when two "free flighted" over our heads at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Out flew two of these guys and the squawk was familiar to us. Color looked right, so Cyndi & I looked at each other and wondered... Afterwards we confirmed it was the RFM and we were proud.

The bird looks like a Military Macaw and a lot of people guess that when I'm out somewhere with Barabbas (like at the Rennaisance festivals). Its actually a very good guess, just this bird is half the size of a military and has the orange spots on the side of the head. A very awesome pet, Barabbas gives us much love and affection, not to mention free entertainment.

Its about breeding time - we just need to get him/her sexed. We got some breeding information about the species from someone who has had several successful clutches. As soon as our sexing tests get back, we will make plans to breed to help perpetuate this wonderful species. The only reason I've heard of as to why this isn't a more popular species is because of the "plain" color as compared to the Blue & Gold/Scarlet birds. Personally, after having this macaw, you couldn't give me a bigger bird. Size is right. Beak is small. Intelligence is there. Like and shows affection. A truly magnificent creature.
